Pelendava, former Dacian fortress, situated in Jiu plain, has gradually outlined a specific social and economic life and came to be known as Craiova long before the first documentary certification of June the1st, 1475 of Prince Basarab Laiotă. Craiova became, later, chair of Craioveşti Banie, the place where Mihai Viteazul (Michael the Brave), startet, and who, in short time, became the first ruler of Romanian, Moldova and Transylvania.
The current appearance of Craiova, with modern architectural lines, with a large industrial presence, social and cultural dimensions gives the city the dimension of a true metropolis. In Craiova exists over 12,000 companies and the main activities are industries, currently at about 70%, commerce, services, import - export and construction.
In the eastern part of Craiova there is the main industrial platform in the electro technical industry units (group ELECTROPUTERE), automotive (Ford factory), construction industry machinery and heavy equipment (MAT SA, SC POPECI SA) and a furniture factory. In the west of the city there are grouped: Doljchim SA, Thermal Power Plant with an installed Işalniţa 1035 MW, a brewery and other units in the construction and civil engineering. In the northern part of the municipality is CET 2, 110 MW, which provides over 70% of hot water needs of Craiova.
The total population of the city is 306,115 inhabitants, of which the employed population is about 110,000 people.

Craiova has over 550 km of water distribution networks; over 438 km of sewerage networks and over 462 km of gas distribution pipelines. The length of the path of the tram is 17 km of single track, served by 28 trams in the Autonomous Transportation. It also has 180 buses and minibuses.

Also, Craiova is a powerful educational center. In the ancient Banie City there are currently two public universities (University of Craiova, University of Medicine and Pharmacy) and a total of 32 schools, seven high schools, five national colleges, 14 vocational schools and 44 kindergartens.
